Classical Pilates vs. other “pilates”
Classical, or authentic Pilates refers to the method that was created by Joseph H. Pilates himself. An instructor of this method uses the same exercises, terminology, order and intention of what was originally designed. Classical instructors must complete a minimum of 75 prerequisite private lessons, 600 hours of apprenticeship and several exams. Upon certification, instructors are required to take continuing education yearly.
Following an unsuccessful lawsuit, a US federal court ruled the term “Pilates” generic thus permitting many untrained or under-qualified instructors to capitalize on the name. When seeking a Pilates instructor, one should verify the certification and credibility of the studio and its teachers.
There are many variations of the original method which can prove to be confusing to someone new to Pilates. Other methods are “Pilates based” or inspired but the execution of the exercises and how they are taught are often times very different from what it was meant to be. The original method is logical, with exercises that flow together without interruption resulting in a workout for the entire body, inside and out with an equal balance of stretch and strength.
The main focus is on the “powerhouse” which is a nickname for the core torso muscles. When working from the center of the body, a deeper, healthier workout is achieved due to better posture and blood flow. The result is a body with long, lean muscles, increased stamina and better control.
